winner of the 2014 Design Journal Platinum ADEX Award
Case Study: Corporate
Project: Blue Cross Blue Shield Regional Headquarters
Location: Richardson, Texas
Goal: Present an overall fine art feel that brings cohesion to four towers with fifteen floors per tower. Choose art to work as a collection, giving an overall fine art feel to the space with an emphasis on nature based subjects and organic forms, using Texas based artists.
The entry lobby presented a challenge as a double set of thin niches were the only art locations available. We took two scenes by a local artist to give the visitors a sense of the natural beauty of Texas - in one set the viewer is at water level peering through trees on an autumn day, in the other the viewer is among big sky clouds peering down on a beautiful spring landscape. It sets the mood for the entire campus by emphasizing both nature and Texas from the start.
Natural images, printed in house by Art Dallas on copper. Printed on metal, they pick up the light changes through the day in a windowless section of corridor.
We commissioned a site specific piece for the escalator lobby made of nearly 500 pieces of hydro cal and epoxy resin.
A unique perspective to make use of a long corridor space - an eleven foot long canvas printed in house at Art Dallas showcasing the photography of an actual working cowboy. This became a project favorite of both employees and administrators.
Another site specific commissioned piece - this hand blown glass installation starts in the escalator lobby leading to a break area at the top, unifying the whole space.
Unique art placed in elevator lobbies provides an efficient way finding tool.
A contemporary twist on historical images from "Two Rivers, Two Lands: An American Passage" - these three dimensional pieces are 86"x48" photo collages printed by Art Dallas on brushed aluminum for the black and white photography, acrylic for the color; and mounted together with double stand offs for a lobby display. This piece was winner of an Adex Design Journal Award for Design Excellence.
A creative approach was need to meet the challenge of displaying huge oil paintings of company presidents from nearly a century ago alongside contemporary photographs of recent presidents.
First we scanned and then cropped the paintings to give them continuity with the modern photographs. All the images were printed by Art Dallas on high quality paper, matted in hand wrapped linen mats with a beaded fillet, and framed in a dark wood frame with water gilded trim. Distinguished enough for the subjects, yet contemporary enough to feel at home in the building.
Every project has areas subject to budget constraints - in this area Art Dallas commissioned five nature scenes formatted as nostalgically faded Polaroids from an emerging Texas artist. They met both the overall goal and budget.
