How to plan a Gallery Wall.

To be fair, yes you CAN wing it. But that’s only after installing dozens of art walls for clients — you can eyeball stuff and intuitively know where it should hang.  But there are still some ground rules that are followed in the selection and arrangement. The importance of balance, telling a story through the work, hanging the focal point piece at eye level, etc. Art Dallas has learned through trial, error and a bit of spackle paste.

HOW DO YOU PLAN AN ART WALL?

Art Dallas has over 5,000 frames to choose from so the selection process is made easy! You can  use prints, or fine art originals, There should be some thought behind each piece. So when it comes to planning, the first step is to love the work and find the right spot for it in your home.

Some things to think about!

Do I love it? Yes.

Do the colors work? Yes.

Does it work with what I’m already planning to use? Yes.

size?

type of framing?

with it be matted?

HOW DO I SELECT THE RIGHT WORK?

First Thoughts for any project should be what do I want this room to convey? Whether it's energy, professionalism or fun. The quickest way to achieve great space is through color and works of art. It can be portraits of people,  black and white city views, anything that makes you want to be in that space.

WHAT IS YOUR THEME OR MOOD?

Questions worth asking when choosing art for a salon style wall include:

Do you plan to show favorite patterns and shapes, colors or a theme -like that you love to travel?

Are you showing only family photos?

Do you want to mix paintings with photography?

Will you mix original works with prints?

WHAT ABOUT FRAMES?

As far as frame colors go, neutrals all tend to work well together – white, natural wood and black. You can introduce metallics, stained woods, colored frames, bright colors and metals are on trend!

You can choose to make the frame to be the focal point, or the artwork inside. The frame shouldn’t contrast with the art too much, unless you are working with a monochromatic scheme (black art, white frame).

HOW ABOUT MATTING?

Work that is framed and matted creates clean lines but artwork with just frames is a beautiful alternative as well. There are many types of matting with different colors and patterns!

HOW DO YOU PLAN OUT AND INSTALL A GALLERY WALL?

Planning complicates the process.  Measuring the wall and then visualizing where each piece will be can help the installation team better understand the vision. Gathering all of the work together in front of where it will be installed and laying it out, playing with the arrangement until it looks right allowing you to be in control of your artwork.
